New Drug in development for HIV Bevirimat

There is a new drug in development bevirimat.  It belongs to a new type of anti-HIV drug called a maturation inhibitor.  It works by stopping HIV from "growing up" putting together a protective outer coat and emerging from the human cells its infected.  It is currently being looked at in Phase 1 clinical trials that are designed to find its most effective, safe dose.  It is for treatment experienced people. 

At UCLA Care clinic the drug is in phase I trials under an ACTG protocol.  It will be interesting to see how these initial trials work out.
